At least 19 dead in Nigeria bombings

At least 19 people have died in a series of bombings and shootings in north-east Nigeria, witnesses said.

At least 19 people have died in a series of bombings and shootings in north-east Nigeria, witnesses said.

The witnesses said the bodies were seen at the site of a car bombing in Damaturu, the capital of Yobe state, as well as in a neighbouring village. Government officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The attacks occurred on Friday amid a wave of bombings in the north east.

There was no claim of responsibility, but blame immediately fell on the sect known as Boko Haram, which has staged targeted assassinations and bombings around Nigeria's north.

An official with the Nigerian Red Cross later said at least 63 people had been killed in the attacks.

Ibrahim Bulama, a Nigerian Red Cross official in Yobe state, said that it appeared many of the dead died in the bombing of a three-storey military office and barracks in Damaturu.

He said others died in shootings as gunmen bombed churches and a bank, then later attacked a village.
