The Institute of Customer Service (ICS) has urged Irish people to complain more if they are unhappy with the standard of service they receive from businesses and other bodies.

The institute is holding a conference in Dublin today on how to improve the standard of customer service in both the public and private sectors.

ICS spokesman Tony Brennan said half of respondents to a recent survey it commissioned felt standards had worsened in the past five years.

However, he said this would not change unless a culture of complaining developed.

"Irish people do not like to complain," he said. "It's not in their psyche, so we need to get better at letting organisations know when they're not delivering the service we expect."
