The two surviving members of Nirvana are demanding Courtney Love prove to a court she is mentally stable.
Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic say Love is "irrational, self-centred and unmanageable."
They are currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Love over the rights to Nirvana's recordings and songs.
More than 120 hours of unreleased Nirvana material is thought to be lying unused in a vault, following a court ruling that allowed Love to block its release.
She inherited husband Kurt Cobain's share in Nirvana Limited Liability Company after his suicide in 1994 and now wants the business to close.
But partners Grohl and Novoselic say Love is too "incapacitated" to take part in the management of the company.
They said: "In her professional dealings, Love is irrational, mercurial, self-centred, unmanageable, inconsistent and unpredictable."
They have asked a court in Seattle to instruct Love be examined by a psychiatrist by June 1, reports The Times.
