Bay Of Fires blazes trail at Catterick

Bay Of Fires made the most of a drop in class when turning in an authoritative performance in the catterickbridge.co.uk Novice Auction Stakes.

Bay Of Fires made the most of a drop in class when turning in an authoritative performance in the catterickbridge.co.uk Novice Auction Stakes today.

The daughter of Iffraaj appeared to find everything happening too quickly for her in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last month but was sent off at 2-5 for this much lesser event.

The youngster disputed the running throughout with market rival Spartic and had an extra gear when it mattered, easing clear passing the furlong marker to score by a length and three-quarters.

Up-and-coming trainer David O'Meara said: "She's a nice filly and it's nice to get this race under her belt after Ascot.

"We have her in at Doncaster tomorrow, but I doubt she'll run there after this. We just put her in as we worried it might be too firm for her today, but they had a bit of rain which has made it lovely ground.

"We'll see what mark she gets but we might go down the nursery route now."

Cross Of Lorraine led home stable companion Musca to give trainer Chris Grant and owner John Wade a one-two in the Yorkshire4x4.com Adventure Activities Selling Stakes.

The 6-1 winner was soon blazing a trail in the hands of Lee Topliss and appeared to have the race in safe-keeping halfway up the home straight.

But Musca finished with a real rattle inside the final furlong and there was just a head between the pair passing the post.

"John trained the pair of them until recently, he sent them to me about three weeks ago because he thought they might benefit from the change of scenery," said Grant.

"I was actually down at the start because Musca has had problems jumping from the stalls in the past, but he got out all right today.

"I thought they were first and second, but I couldn't see for sure from where I was stood. It's worked out well and the drop in class has obviously helped too."

There were no bids for the winner at the subsequent auction.
