Hurley bedazzles town with Christmas lights

Actress and model Elizabeth Hurley brought some Hollywood dazzle to a rural town tonight by switching on its Christmas lights.

Glowing in a knee-length bright orange coat and dress and black knee-high boots, the film star delighted the people of Cirencester, Gloucestershire, by saying she was “honoured” at the privilege and posing with Santa.

Hundreds of people packed the streets to see the star, who lives in an old farmhouse in the nearby village of Ampney Knowle.

The 38-year-old mother-of-one appeared to be enjoying the rural good cheer as she spoke to the crowd from a stage and presented a cheque to a local charity before switching on the lights.

Smiling broadly, she said: “I was unbelievably honoured when I was asked to switch the lights on.”

She said the town had made her and her family “very welcome” and there was no place she would rather live.

She posed with Santa and wished the people of the town a happy Christmas before being presented with a bouquet of flowers and a large abacus for her 19-month-old son Damian.

The event coincided with the town’s Advent Market, which included a large number of stalls, carols played by a Salvation Army band, and fake snow.

Chris Norton, 48, who had come back from abroad to her home town to see the event, said: “She was lovely. It’s nice to see something going right for Cirencester.”

However, schoolgirl Ellie Collyer-Bristow, 17, said: “I don’t think that many people are that bothered. I don’t think this will change Cirencester that much.”
