A government official today said the death toll from yesterday’s earthquake on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has reached 467.

A government official today said the death toll from yesterday’s earthquake on Indonesia’s Sumatra island has reached 467.

Tugiyo Bisri of the Social Affairs Ministry’s crisis centre said 467 people are confirmed dead and 421 seriously injured after the 7.6 magnitude quake.

He said 376 deaths occurred in Padang, the capital of West Sumatra province. Pasaman district accounted for 75 deaths and the other dead were from three other districts.

Another powerful quake hit Sumatra island today, the US Geological Survey said.

The 6.9 magnitude quake struck at 8.52am local time (2.52am BST), about 180 miles from the epicentre of yesterday’s quake.
