Mamool magnificent at Baden-Baden

Mamool earned a quote of 25-1 from Coral for the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe after giving Godolphin another Group One success in the Grosser Bugatti Pries at Baden-Baden.

The Dubai team were also on the mark in this race last year with subsequent Arc winner Marienbard.

In Sunday’s 12-furlong contest Frankie Dettori settled the Yorkshire Cup winner in fourth place as Michael Kinane made the running on Black Sam Bellamy, chased by Mark Johnston’s Systematic and local hope Next Desert.

The field swung wide into the final straight where Kinane set sail for home as Systematic weakened.

But just as it looked as though Black Sam Bellamy was going to out-gallop his rivals, Dettori produced Mamool with a well-timed challenge.

Mamool (5.4-1) soon got on top but had to be kept right up to his work to hold the rallying Black Sam Bellamy in a close finish and provide Godolphin with their 101st success at the highest level.

Dano-Mast, the Danish contender finished two lengths further back in third, while Systematic was fifth.

After his flying dismount Dettori said: “I got a phone call from Sheikh Mohammed, who is with Simon Crisford in Keeneland, just before the race to tell me to stay close to the pace. That is what I did and it all went to plan.

“I was a little bit surprised that we won here. I mean I thought we had a chance but I knew that he had to run his best race if we wanted to win. That is what he did.

“I tried to get the best ground and find a good rhythm as I knew that Black Sam Bellamy wouldn’t stop.

“His ultimate distance would be a mile and six. The slow ground here compensated for the distance.

“There are plenty of options for him now – there is a big race at Cologne here in Germany in three weeks, the Canadian International and obviously the Arc comes into the equation and even the Melbourne Cup. Now it is down to the Godolphin team to make a decision.”

On the Godolphin website racing manager Simon Crisford said: “Mamool is well entered up in all of the top races. He is in the Arc and obviously that will be under consideration.

“Canada is an alternative option and there are other races he could go for.

“We will see how he comes out of this race and what sort of progress he makes.

“We were very pleased with this performance which was a high-class effort and he galloped all the way to the line. He beat some very strong opposition in the process.”

Kinane was pleased with Black Sam Bellamy’s effort.

He said: “He ran a very good race and I am happy with that.”

The favourite Next Desert finished well beaten.

Andrasch Starke, his jockey, could not explain the poor run and said: “He travelled well until we got to the final bend. Then, from one moment to the other, he had nothing left. The ground is no excuse.”
