The Pop Idol 12 have flopped to fifth place in the race for the Christmas number one in Britain, according to sales figures.
The Darkness and Gary Jules are both out-selling Pop Idol by three to one.
Although they started out as the bookies’ favourites, the Pop Idol finalists are now languishing behind Kelly and Ozzy Osbourne and Avid Merrion.
Current frontrunners are The Darkness with their single Christmas Time (Don’t Let The Bells End).
But Gary Jules, with his cover of Tears For Fears’ Mad World, is hot on their heels.
A HMV spokesman said: “The Darkness and Gary Jules are so close – only a couple of thousand sales separate them.
“Jules has come out of nowhere and it could be that The Darkness had a lot of early sales but can’t sustain them. Jules is the dark horse in this race and he could well do it.
“The big surprise is how badly Pop Idol are doing. Everyone expected them to have huge sales but it just hasn’t happened.”
Bookmakers Ladbrokes have lengthened the Pop Idol 12 odds to 7/2. The Darkness are 8/11 and Gary Jules is down to 2/1.
Mad World started out as a 50/1 shot in November and bookies face a huge payout if it tops the chart.
