A British postman has been charged with stealing more than 130,000 undelivered letters and leaflets dating as far back as five years.
Nick Fryer is to be prosecuted by his bosses for allegedly hoarding the items, which should have been distributed around north Staffordshire.
Fryer, aged 31, who was based at the Kidsgrove delivery office, was sacked after officials who carried out an internal investigation recovered 116,000 undelivered leaflets and 17,000 letters.
Fryer, who lives in the nearby village of Audley, will appear before North Staffordshire Magistrates Court, Stoke-on-Trent, on July 27 charged with two counts of theft and one of false accounting.
The latter charge relates to the leaflets. Postmen who agree to deliver them on top of their usual loads receive extra money.
A Royal Mail spokesman said: “Royal Mail takes the security of customers’ mail very seriously.
“We operate a zero-tolerance policy towards the mistreatment of mail and will take all appropriate action.”
