Cahill strikes a chord with Moyes
David Moyes admits he is happy for Tim Cahill to continue leading the line for Everton, but will be working hard to bolster his attacking options in the January loan market.
Cahill has been pressed into action as a makeshift forward due to a crushing sequence of injuries at Goodison Park, which left manager Moyes without Ayegbeni Yakubu, James Vaughan, Victor Anichebe plus midfielder Leon Osman for the busy festive period.
Anichebe is finally on his way back after making a 13-minute cameo against Sunderland, but Cahill – supported by the slightly deeper-lying Marouane Fellaini – was able to help steer the Toffees to two wins and an impressive draw against Chelsea in the Christmas programme.
Moyes, whose side travel to Macclesfield for tomorrow’s FA Cup third-round clash, insists he is confident the Australian can make the grade as a striker, but will nevertheless look to strengthen his hand with some temporary moves.
And the latest setback for injury-plagued Saha – he will now be out for at least another four weeks – means a swift loan move could become even more crucial.
“The boys who have played up front have been a handful every time and I’m very pleased with how Tim has done it,” said the Scot.
“But I’ve said for a while we would like to bring in at least one more striker if possible, subject to it being a loan signing because we don’t have the finances in this window to buy.
“We’re not intending to sell anybody because there’s nobody I want to sell and we’re not intending to buy, but we’ll try to get a loan player or two in.”
