This photo of a dog watching over his dead companion's body will break your heart.
Samuel Flores was driving down the road near Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in Texas when he spotted the Great Pyrenees dog standing patiently beside another dog who appeared to have been struck by a car.
He then posted a photo to Facebook asking if anyone could help.
Animal advocates Julie Fennell and Jessy Faiferlick got on the case and drove down to the cemetery, with Faiferlick arriving first. She told the Dodo that he barked at her when she approached but when he realised she was there to help, he gave her his paw.
"When I got there we took him to my car and loaded his friend up to get scanned," Fennell said.
"You could tell from the blood in the road that he had dragged her body out of the road up onto the grass. When we drove away he got into the small back window of my car to look for his friend."
Based on the condition of the other dog's body, they believe he stood with her for hours.
"He is a very loyal dog," Fennell said. "When we were driving to the shelter he sat with his paw on my shoulder."
It is not clear where either dog came from or if they are strays. Dallas Animal Services are now attempting to find his owner and are looking after the dog, who had no collar or microchip. If they do not find them, he can be rehomed.
"He made a friend," Fennell said, "Whether it was his companion in his yard at home or whether they met up as strays, but something made him stay by her side."
