The impact of September 11 on tourism has been starkly highlighted by a drop in the number of tourists coming to Ireland in the three months after the terrorist attacks.

Overseas visitors to Ireland dropped by just over 2%, while transatlantic tourists fell by a huge 15.5%.

Almost 1.3m people visited Ireland from abroad between October and December last year, but this is a drop of 2.2% on the same period last year.

Despite the drop we still have managed to generate €802m through tourism in Ireland.

The Irish do not seem to have been put off travelling abroad also, as we took just under 900,000 trips overseas in the same period.
