Mena Suvari has said that she is delighted to marry “in the city of romance”.

The ‘American Beauty’ actress, who tied the knot with music promoter Simone Sestito on Saturday, thinks their venue choices of Santo Stefano degli Abissini, an 8th-century church in Vatican City for the servie and Castello Odescalchi, a 15th-century castle in nearby Bracciano for the reception were the perfect places to start their life together.

The couple told People magazine: “Rome is the true city of romance, and to be able to wed in the Eternal City is all we could have asked for this occasion.”

Mena and her 25-year-old spouse described the service as “very traditional and romantic”, with a string quartet, organist and soprano performing as the 31-year-old actress walked down the aisle, wearing an Alice and Olivia dress with Claudia Ciuti shoes and Nova Diamonds earrings.

Simone designed the couple’s white-gold wedding rings himself.

At the reception, guests dined on risotto, raviolini and veal, before watching the happy couple enjoy their first dance to an original composition by Mario Reyes, who performed with members of the Gipsy Kings. They were later treated to a fireworks display.

The couple are now planning to spend a few more days with friends and family in Rome before spending time travelling around Italy on their honeymoon.

The actress added: “After that, we’re looking forward to a happy, fruitful life together.”

Suvari recently revealed she had been desperate to find a wedding dress which will cover her tattoos as she wanted to respect the concert producer’s religious family.

She said: “I think it would be considerate to Simone's family to have my tattoos covered, since there are two Catholic nuns on his mother's side of the family.”
