Bhoys up for Cup challenge

Celtic today turned their attentions to a tough Tennent’s Scottish Cup tie at Hearts – after powering to their 21st consecutive league victory of the season.

The runaway Bank of Scotland Premier League leaders are just one win away - following yesterday’s dismissal of Kilmarnock – from equalling the all-time record of 22 successive wins set by Morton in the 1963-64 campaign.

But that will be put on hold for the time being as they focus on next Saturday’s fourth-round match at Tynecastle.

“Confidence is high – and although people will always talk about the unbeaten run, we don’t feel any pressure because of it,” said goalscoring winger Didier Agathe.

“It is our job to always go out and try to collect three points from every game we play in, and that will always be our philosophy.”

The Bhoys’ run was apparently in doubt after a goalless first half at Parkhead yesterday.

But despite not being anywhere near their best, they still managed to thrash Kilmarnock 5-1 to move 14 points clear of rivals Rangers at the top of the table.

Agathe spearheaded the triumph with the opener, eight minutes into the second half.

“I was pleased to get the goal. It means I’ve scored more goals this season than I have in training,” admitted the 28-year-old.

“Stephen Pearson has scored two now – I’ll have to watch, because he’s catching up with me.”

Agathe conceded Celtic had to work hard for their win.

“It was a very difficult game for us, especially in the first half, and it was tough for us to find space because Kilmarnock had a few bodies behind the ball,” he said.

“I was happy with the result, because no one would have predicted it at the break.

“The most important thing was for us to go and win the match – and we knew that we wanted to score early in the second period to give us a boost.”

John Hartson bagged two goals, while Henrik Larsson and Pearson also hit the net.

The young midfielder has scored twice in two games, and Agathe feels he has a big future at Parkhead.

“He’s been in the team since signing for us and he has done very well,” said the Frenchman.

“To play in this team you need to have a strong mentality, and I’ve needed that the four seasons I’ve been here.

“There is always pressure at a club like this, and I am happy that he has been doing very well. He is quiet but he seems to be a nice guy – and if I’m not careful he’ll soon be scoring more than me.”

Kilmarnock had only Eric Skora’s superb chip for a consolation, and manager Jim Jefferies was in no doubt the scoreline flattered Celtic.

“It’s the best Kilmarnock have played here in my time, certainly in the first half,” he said.

“Celtic didn’t really cause us any problems in the first half. We had the best two chances in the first half, and I’m sitting there thinking we maybe could cause a shock and get something.

“But, as happens often, we lost a goal and then we lose more. Celtic had four or five chances and scored every time.

“They scored with every chance they made. Apart from the goals they didn’t create many more chances.

“We gifted Celtic some of their goals. But I can take a lot from today’s game, apart from the disastrous last half-hour.”
