Rooney to sign contract by New Year

Everton expect teenage starlet Wayne Rooney to sign a new long-term contract by the New Year.

Manager David Moyes today confirmed that the 17-year-old will put pen to paper either next month or in January on a four or five-year deal to end speculation over his immediate future.

“In principle, everything is agreed, as far as I know,” Moyes told BBC Radio Five Live’s Sportsweek programme.

“He will be an Everton player and I have never had any worries about that since I came to the club.

“I know there was a lot of speculation, but it’s due to be done, I think, some time in December or January.

“The sooner the better, and it sort of ends all the people who were saying quite a few untruths.

“He’s in the process of changing his companies who work for him, so that’s where we are just now.

“I think it will be roughly four or five years. I don’t know the exact timing of it, but he’ll be tied to Everton for a sufficient period.”

Rooney’s emergence from the shadows at Goodison Park has been spectacular, ending Arsenal’s unbeaten Premiership run and then shooting down Leeds to announce his arrival on the big stage.

But Moyes has been careful to protect his prodigy, and admits to taking a leaf out of Alex Ferguson’s book by attempting to mirror the Manchester United chief’s handling of the young Ryan Giggs.

“I didn’t speak to Sir Alex regarding that, but I looked at it from a distance how he handled Ryan Giggs, and this is the way I perceived it to be,” he said.

“Ryan Giggs has turned out to be obviously a top class football player, but also a level-headed individual off the field as well.

“We’re hoping to groom Wayne in the same direction if possible.”

Meanwhile, Moyes has admitted he is unlikely to handed a cash windfall with which to strengthen his squad once the transfer window reopens in January despite his side’s excellent start to the season.

“That’s not likely and it’s important that people know that,” he said. “I don’t foresee us having a great deal of money to spend to bring in new players.

“And let’s be fair, the players who have been here last year are again doing a wonderful job this year.

“They’re playing very well and at this moment in time, we’re delighted with every one of them, and we’ve also got players who are not in the team who have performed very well and are waiting for their opportunity to get in.

“But I don’t think we will have a big chequebook to go out and do much business in January.”
