Georgia Taylor, who plays Toyah Battersby, today announced she was quitting the soap.
The award-winning 22-year-old will leave the show in January, more than five years after joining as part of the Battersby clan.
Taylor’s current contract ends in October but she has agreed to extend it by three months to give scriptwriters time to devise “an explosive storyline” for her departure, said a Corrie spokeswoman.
Taylor said today: “I have had the most amazing time working on Coronation Street but the time has come to move on and try my hand at other things.
“I have made some wonderful friends that I know I will have for life. I will be sad to leave but I am very excited about the future.”
Wigan-born Georgia scooped the best dramatic performance award in the 2001 Soap Awards for her portrayal of teenage rape victim Toyah and she is now keen to pursue new acting roles.
Coronation Street producer Kieran Roberts said: “Georgia Taylor has been a huge asset to the show during her five years here.
“She is a talented young actress and we will be sorry to see her go but we totally understand her decision to move on and we wish her every success for the future.”
