Keane admits McCarthy attack was wrong

Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane has reportedly admitted that he was wrong to verbally attack Mick McCarthy.

Former Republic of Ireland captain Roy Keane has reportedly admitted that he was wrong to verbally attack Mick McCarthy.

Keane, who returned to his Manchester home at the weekend after being sacked from the Irish squad says he knows he will be blamed if the team fails to progress past the World Cup group stages.

In an interview in today’s British Daily Mail newspaper, the ousted captain insisted he was provoked by McCarthy who accused him of feigning injury to miss the second leg of Ireland’s play-off game with Iran last November.

Keane now admits he could not have expected to get away with his remarks.

Last night, the FAI said any last minute reconciliation was entirely up to the manager.

A spokesman for the association added that if Keane decided to apologise, the context of such an apology and the assessment of it by McCarthy and his squad would determine the possibility of his return.
