US President Barack Obama said today he was proud of the US forces who successfully rescued a cargo ship captain held hostage by pirates in the Horn of Africa.
President Obama spoke for the first time in public about the five-day hostage siege.
He made a written statement over the weekend and had given approval for the sniper shots that saved Captain Richard Phillips.
While speaking today at an event on the economic stimulus programme, Mr Obama made a point of stating that the captain’s safety was the main concern for the US administration throughout the crisis.
And he resolved that the United States must halt an increasing threat of piracy off the coast of lawless Somalia.
