Upmarket emporium Selfridges was today named best department store in the world.

The UK-based chain fought off stiff competition from world famous Bloomingdale’s in New York and Lane Crawford in Hong Kong to capture the prestigious retail prize.

Selfridges’ century-old flagship store in central London is renowned for the innovative displays adorning its windows.

The company also has a store in Birmingham and two in Manchester.

Paul Kelly, Selfridges Vice Chairman, said: “We are delighted to have won this very special award and very proud of our teams who have all contributed in making this happen.

“This is very much in recognition of all their hard work. This centenary-old brand, built on the most extraordinary heritage, confirms that Selfridges is the most relevant and exciting department store today.”

Selfridges received the accolade at the Global Department Store Summit in New York.

The award was decided on behalf of both the IGDS (Intercontinental Group of Department Stores) and the IADS (International Association of Department Stores).
