Tragedy as newborn baby found in UK train station bin

British detectives said today they urgently want the mother of a new born baby found dead at a railway station to come forward.

The white baby girl was found yesterday morning by a cleaner in a bin at the front of Fleet station in North Hampshire.

Initial investigations found that the baby, who was in a plastic bag, had only recently been born and had suffered significant injuries which were not caused during childbirth, sparking a murder inquiry.

A full post-mortem examination is being carried out this afternoon at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London by a specialist Home Office pathologist.

Detective Superintendent Jason Hogg, who is leading the inquiry, said: “Our absolute priority remains trying to trace this baby’s mother as a matter of urgency. She will have very recently given birth and may need medical attention herself.

“I would appeal directly to her to please go to her nearest hospital or call 999 and ask for an ambulance. We can ensure she receives the help and care she needs.

“If you are a relative or friend of the baby’s mother and are worried about contacting the police, I would like to reassure you that we share your concerns for her wellbeing. You can contact us in confidence and we will treat her sensitively.

“We are also still trying to trace any witnesses who were at the train station yesterday morning and may have seen someone carrying a bag, or depositing a bag in the bins.

“We are working with our colleagues at British Transport Police to check CCTV footage and would ask anyone with any information to get in touch.”
