Harrison Ford's wife of 18 years has filed for legal separation, citing irreconcilable differences.

Ford and his wife, screenwriter Melissa Mathison Ford, have been living apart since October 2000.

They declined to comment on the court filing.

"The only statement they have is that Melissa filed for separation from Harrison and the couple remain amicable," said Patricia McQueeney, Harrison Ford's agent.

Mathison is seeking joint custody of their son, Malcolm, 14, and daughter, Georgia, 11, according to the Los Angeles Superior Court petition.

Over the past 25 years, Ford, 59, has starred most notably in the Indiana Jones and Star Wars movies. Mathison has written such films as ET the Extra-Terrestrial and Kundun.

Harrison Ford has two adult sons by his first wife Mary Marquardt, whom he divorced in 1979.
