An easyJet Boeing 737 carrying 123 passengers on a flight to Luton from Greece malfunctioned shortly after take-off and was forced to make an emergency landing, the airline said.

The pilot of easyJet flight 2002 reported a problem with one engine shortly after take-off from Athens, at 11.05pm local time yesterday (9.05pm Irish time) and asked for an emergency landing.

The plane dumped most of its fuel and landed safely at Athens airport at 11.39pm (9.39pm Irish time).

A representative for the budget airline said last night it was not known yet when the passengers would resume their flight, either with the same plane or a replacement.
