Cavill set for 'Godzilla' role

Henry Cavill has been shortlisted to star in the new 'Godzilla' film.

The British actor - who will soon be seen donning the famous Superman costume in 'Man of Steel' - is in contention for the lead role in Warner Bros' reboot of the monster franchise, along with 'X-Men: First Class' star Caleb Landry Jones and 'Killing Them Softly' actor Scoot McNairy.

'The Dark Knight Rises' actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt was said to be the studio's first choice to star in the blockbuster, but he reportedly turned down the role last year.

Henry, 29, is said to be the studio's favourite for the lead role, while the film's creative team - including director Gareth Edwards, who worked with Scoot on 2010 film 'Monsters' - are said to be in favour of the lesser-known actors, according to Variety journalist Justin Kroll.

'The Walking Dead' creator Frank Darabont has been charged with penning the final rewrite of Max Borenstein's script, while 'Iron Man 3' writer Drew Pearce also wrote a version of the film.

'Godzilla' is set to be released in 2014.

The famous monster originated in Japanese cinema and was last adapted for Hollywood in 1998.

The original film, directed by Roland Emmerich, starred Matthew Broderick and Jean Reno and grossed more than $379m (€289.17m).
