Sunderland defender Gary Breen has emerged as a major doubt for Ireland’s crucial Euro 2004 qualifier against Switzerland in Basle on October 11.

Breen is expected to be out of action for up to a month after picking up a groin injury while playing for Sunderland on Tuesday.

Irish manager Brian Kerr has already been forced to plan for the Switzerland game without captain Kenny Cunningham, who will miss the match through suspension.

Breen and Cunningham have been the foundation of the Irish defence under Kerr.

Ireland need a victory against the Swiss to book a place in the play-offs of the Euro 2004 qualifiers.
