Bernhard Langer could emerge as favourite to be Europe's next Ryder Cup captain once this week's match is over - if he is willing to take the job.
Nick Faldo was the first to throw his hat into the ring to be Sam Torrance's successor.
But Langer has not yet ruled himself out of the race and it is understood he may well be encouraged to declare his availability.
The 45-year-old German says that how he now performs against the United States on his return to the side - and how much he enjoys his 10th appearance - will not be the overriding factors in his eventual decision.
"It's a matter of whether I think it's is the right time or not," said Langer.
"I'll find out what I would need to do and then decide during the winter."
He intends consulting with his American wife Vikki and adds: "I will have to look at the big picture. It's a big commitment."
