Lady Gaga just mimics me, says M.I.A

M.I.A reckons Lady Gaga is a “mimic” of her and “the industry’s last stab at making itself important”.

The ‘Paper Planes’ singer understands comparisons between herself and Gaga when it comes to image, but reckons her pop rival’s songs live up to her eclectic, forward thinking style.

She told NME: “There’s Gaga – people say we’re similar, that we both mix all these things in the pot and spit them out differently, but she spits it out exactly the same.

“None of her music’s reflective of how weird she wants to be. She models herself on Grace Jones and Madonna, but the music sounds like a 20-year-old Ibiza disco.

“She’s not progressive, but she’s a good mimic. She sounds more like me than I f***ing do!”

M.I.A also added that the ‘Telephone’ singer represents the corporate music industry, which flies in the face of her Do-It-Yourself ethos.

She added: “She’s got a great team behind her, but she’s the industry’s last stab at making itself important – saying: ‘You need our money behind you, the endorsements, the stadiums’. Respect to her, she’s kept a thousand people working, but my belief is Do-It-Yourself.”

M.I.A - real name Maya Arulpragasam - also said she turned down the opportunity to have a song on the teen movie ‘Twilight’.

She added: “They asked me. Luckily he chairman of my US label had beef with the ‘Twilight’ people, so he stepped in and told them to f**k off.”
