Limerick hurling chiefs will appoint Pat Joe Whelahan as their new county senior manager in succession to Dave Keane tonight.

Birr maestro Whelahan led the Offaly club to a record fourth All-Ireland club title on St Patrick's Day and formerly managed the county side in the late 1980s.

He is expected to get the nod to take over the Shannonside hot seat though the politics that saw him overlooked for the Offaly job last year could prove just as difficult to deal with in strife-ridden Limerick.
