Newcastle striker Michael Owen will almost certainly not make his comeback from a foot fracture in the FA Cup quarter-final clash with Chelsea next month.
The 26-year-old England forward is progressing well after returning to training following surgery to repair the metatarsal he damaged at Tottenham on New Year’s Eve.
However, caretaker boss Glenn Roeder has described as “laughable” suggestions that Owen could return within a fortnight, and played down his chances of lining up at Stamford Bride on March 22.
“Michael is doing really well at the moment,” he said. “He’s up to jogging continuously for about 30 minutes without any problems, pain-free.
“He could be slightly ahead of time – he’s certainly not behind time, which is good news for Newcastle and obviously England. With Michael Owen, you have to think about both but, of course, Newcastle comes first.
“It would be absolutely stupid to rush him back, and Michael wouldn’t let that happen anyway because he’s probably one of the most intelligent footballers I’ve ever had anything to do with. He’s a really smashing man to work with.
“We have had some X-rays in the last couple of weeks and they have shown that the fracture has healed really well, and everyone is really happy with him.
“But to suggest he will be playing in a couple of weeks is nonsense; to suggest he could be ready for the cup game is a little bit far-fetched as well.
“I wouldn’t rule it out completely but, to be honest, I would say no, he wouldn’t make that at the moment.”
