A Jordanian military court has convicted one of its citizens of stabbing a German tourist last year in what the government described as a “terrorist act”.

Mohammed Mahdi Barham was also sentenced to 15 years for stabbing a 63-year-old tourist with a knife as the man walked in the capital Amman with his wife on March 14, 2008.

The German, whom police did not identify, was wounded but later released from the hospital.

The Interior Ministry described the incident as terror-related, saying Barham was a believer in extremist Islamist ideology.

A medical report released during the hearing said 34-year-old Barham did not suffer from any mental illness and was “fully aware of his acts”.
