Narcotics police captured 507 kilograms of heroin in Turkey’s largest seizure of the drug, a Turkish governor said on Saturday.

Police followed suspected drugs’ smugglers for about five months, searched a vehicle in Istanbul on November 5, and seized 505kgs of heroin stashed in secret compartments, said Gov. Muammer Guler of Istanbul.

In addition, two kilograms of heroin was captured in a simultaneous raid on a farm house near Istanbul along with material used to produce heroin, Guler said.

Thirteen suspects were arrested.

More than two tons of heroin have been seized in about 600 raids in Turkey since January, police said on Saturday.

More than 1,500 drug smugglers were arrested in the operations, it added.

Turkey is a major transit point for drugs smuggled from the Middle East and Asia to Europe.
