Sampdoria wait on Cassano review

Sampdoria will not issue any further statements on the status of dropped striker Antonio Cassano until a league arbitration panel has reviewed the case.

Sampdoria will not issue any further statements on the status of dropped striker Antonio Cassano until a league arbitration panel has reviewed the case.

The Genoa club reported the Italian striker to the league following heated arguments between Cassano and club president Riccardo Garrone that have led to the player being left out of the squad.

Samp confirmed on Friday evening that they would impose disciplinary action against the player.

“We will not release any information until the arbitrary college of the league speaks out,” said Samp general director Sergio Gasparin.

The confrontation was apparently a result of the player’s absence at an awards ceremony.

The temperamental Cassano apologised on Italian TV and did admit he has had some problems in his personal life but did not go on to reveal what they were.

“I am very disappointed at what happened and have already apologised to president Garrone, who I care for very much, in front of my team-mates,” he said.

“I read that this whole affair might have been linked to transfer speculation, but I confirm that – if given the opportunity – it is my firm intention to remain at Sampdoria.”

Cassano’s agent, Giuseppe Bozzo, has neither confirmed nor denied whether his client will begin action to stop the club should they look to terminate his contract.

“At this time it’s necessary to be silent,” he said.

“In the next few days, we will evaluate the situation.”

The 28-year-old Cassano joined Samp from Real Madrid three years ago and is under contract with the club until June 2013.
