Beckham in Trinidad to boost England World Cup bid
David Beckham did his bit to boost England’s hopes of hosting the 2018 World Cup by attending the final of the FIFA Under-17 World Cup In Trinidad.
The England 2018 vice-president saw South Korea beat Japan in the final which was staged at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.
Beckham is on the island where he is honouring a personal commitment to CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner to bring his academy to the Caribbean.
The final is part of a football festival which will see Beckham’s academy staff coaching girls and boys in Trinidad and Tobago.
Beckham said: “This whole weekend has special relevance because encouraging young girls to play football has always been an important part of the thinking behind the academy.
“I’m really excited to be here and meet the young players and their coaches and to help demonstrate the sort of activity England would provide to men and women, boys and girls around the world if England is successful in winning the right to stage the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
“I’m extremely proud the academy is part of England’s Bid. The proposal with England 2018/22 is an exciting one as football is such a great way to inspire and educate young people and that’s exactly what the local people here in Trinidad and Tobago will be seeing this week.”
England will find out if they have won the right to stage the 2018 or 2022 World Cup in December.
