Geoff Hurst believes Darius Vassell could be England's lethal weapon as they gear up for their opening clash with Sweden.
Hurst scored a hat-trick in the 1966 final win over West Germany, just five months after being brought into the squad by Sir Alf Ramsey.
Now he feels Vassell could make a big impact in Japan and Korea, after forcing his way into the final 23.
Hurst said: "He is an extremely gifted player and what has impressed me most is the way he has managed to raise his game for England.
"He has a true striker's instinct and doesn't worry about things if they do not work out.
"Darius has always had the talent. He has shown it already for Villa and the England Under-21 side."
Hurst added: "I feel Darius can go on and do well in this competition. He has pace, control and a quick mind.
"He also gives Sven-Goran Eriksson options and has that unpredictable quality that can change games - and in a World Cup it is vital for you to have players like that.
"He can score spectacular goals, as we have all seen, but Darius can also beat defenders with pace, move out wide and produce dangerous crosses.
"With all the ability he has, Darius can unsettle defences and that is a vital quality for Sven to be able to turn to. The World Cup could be the making of him."
