A lorry driver is being quizzed by police in England today after a motorway crash left six people dead and one man fighting for life in hospital.

The accident happened on the M25 in Surrey when a recovery vehicle with a broken down minibus on the back collided with the back of a HGV.

Police said it was too early to determine what caused the accident, which left the cab of the recovery vehicle completely destroyed.

The incident occurred at 2.15am.

The six dead and the seventh injured man were all travelling with the white minibus, while the lorry driver was uninjured.

A police statement said: “The mini bus had earlier broken down and the six passengers from the minibus had transferred to the cab of the recovery vehicle. There are six fatalities and one person seriously injured in hospital.

“The driver of the HGV has not been injured and is helping Surrey Police with their inquiries. At this stage it is too early to confirm the exact cause of the accident.”

Details of the dead are not being released until they had been formally identified, but all are thought to be adults.

The destination of the minibus has not been disclosed.

The cab of the recovery vehicle was seen at the scene to have been completely destroyed. Wreckage from the vehicle was strewn across two carriageways. The recovery vehicle appeared to have stopped behind the purple lorry.

A spokeswoman for Surrey Ambulance Service said of the injured man: “It took over an hour to extricate the man from the vehicle. Paramedics were keeping him stable.”

She said his injuries were “multiple and possibly life-threatening”.

Four ambulances attended the scene.

The police and ambulance service believe all those involved were all adults.
