Sonia Gandhi, the head of India’s ruling Congress party, is being treated in a New Delhi hospital for a chest infection, a hospital official said today.

Ms Gandhi, 61, was in stable condition after checking in with mild breathing problems late on Monday night, said Dr B.K. Rao, an official at the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in the Indian capital.

Ms Gandhi had begun receiving treatment and was doing well, Rao said in a statement issued by the hospital. It did not say when she would be released.

Italian-born Gandhi, one of the country’s most powerful politicians, comes from India’s pre-eminent political dynasty.

She entered politics after her husband, former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, was assassinated in 1991.

His mother was Indira Gandhi, the country’s longest-serving prime minister, and his grandfather was Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister.
