Indonesia sacks Wahid

The Indonesian parliament has dismissed President Abdurrahman Wahid.

Vice President Megawati Sukarnoputri has been elected head of state.

The motion to dismiss Wahid was passed by 591-0.

The vote was taken after army generals and senior police officers rejected an emergency decree issued hours before by Wahid that ordered the assembly's immediate suspension.

"By issuing that decree, the president violated the constitution and should be dismissed," said assembly chairman Amein Rais, minutes before the ballot went ahead after it was delayed by a confused debate over procedure.

Megawati is to be installed formally on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, aides say Wahid has not accepted the legality of the vote and is refusing to vacate the presidential palace.
