GAA: Former Co Down star applies for place with Armagh

Former Co Down footballer James McCartan has applied to the Ulster GAA Council for a transfer to the Armagh team - but the terms of the application surprised all involved.

Former Co Down footballer James McCartan has applied to the Ulster GAA Council for a transfer to the Armagh team - but the terms of the application surprised all involved.

McCartan’s place of birth was actually Armagh, but the Council rules on the residency of the parents at the time of birth.

This has meant McCartan must re-state his allegiance to Down, the county with which he won All-Ireland titles with in 1991 and 1994, while also winning All Star awards in both years.
