Everton manager David Moyes is expected to step up his bid over the weekend to sign Nigerian World Cup star Joseph Yobo.
Yobo is also wanted by Juventus as a replacement for full back Lilian Thuram but the 21-year-old is happiest playing as a central defender.
That could tip the balance in Everton’s favour, who see him continuing in the position he plays for Marseille.
Yobo featured in all Nigeria’s World Cup games at right back, centre half and in midfield.
Everton know they would have to pay around £3m (€4.7m) for his services but believe he is just the type of player they need.
‘‘Yobo is a very good player, probably the best from Nigeria. I have no doubt he is a future captain of his country,’’ manager David Moyes told the Liverpool Echo.
‘‘He is young and will improve. I hope over the next couple of days we will move a little closer to signing him.’’
