Carlton Blues coach Denis Pagan is getting a glimpse at what might have been this week as Cork hurler Seán Óg Ó hAilpín trains with his Aussie Rules-playing brothers Down Under.
At 28, the eldest Ó hAilpín is too old for Pagan to snap up but the 2005 All-Ireland winner is holding his own as an invited guest at the Melbourne club's pre-season training.
Pagan told the club's website: “I wish he (Seán Óg) was five or six years younger, you certainly would [sign him]. The way he's come in and the way he's adapted to the Aussie Rules game is amazing.
“It really bears testimony to his athletic ability to be able to come in and pick it up, on a windy day like this when blokes have been playing all their lives and not hit a target.
“I think it's quite freakish, actually.”
Pagan has allowed Seán Óg a glimpse at what his young brothers Setanta, now a senior Blue, and rookie Aisake go through week-to-week.
“Seán Óg couldn't believe, coming from an amateur background, even though it is an elite sport in Ireland, the intensity and how hard it is,” Pagan added.
“He can add something to our training, even if it is only for a couple of weeks, and we're quite happy to have him on board.”
