Astronomers across the globe are gearing up for what is promised to be a dramatic natural fireworks display as the Earth’s protective atmosphere is bombarded by a meteor shower.
People living in south-east Asia and Australia will have the best opportunity to see the shower as meteors burn up in Earth’s upper atmosphere at tremendous speeds.
However, stargazers throughout Ireland will also be watching the stars overnight in the hope of catching the show, providing the skies are clear.
However, there is also the very real possibility that major communications satellites will be damaged or knocked out of orbit during the shower, potentially causing millions of pounds worth of damage.
