Healy becomes North's top scorer

Striker David Healy became Northern Ireland’s all-time leading goalscorer with two goals in last night’s 3-0 friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago.

Striker David Healy became Northern Ireland’s all-time leading goalscorer with two goals in last night’s 3-0 friendly win over Trinidad and Tobago.

The 24-year-old added to his strikes in the 2-0 win against St Kitts & Nevis and the 1-1 draw with Barbados, and was easily Northern Ireland’s most influential player of the Caribbean tour.

The Preston forward is shocked by his achievement but ready to improve his mark of 14 international goals, which betters the 13 of Colin Clarke and Billy Gillespie.

“Right now I am lost for words. I really don’t know what to say but I guess after people begin talking about it and after a couple days I think it will sink in,” said Healy.

“I don’t just want to break this record but I want to go on and score more goals for my country and possibly set a mark.”

Healy’s first came from 40 yards out after referee Barney Callender of Barbados had given a free-kick for a foul on the striker.

Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Clayton Ince came way out of his goal to direct his defenders and Healy spotted his opportunity, sending a powerful shot into the back of the net.

Healy scored his second, the record breaker, in the 65th minute. A Philip Mulryne corner was headed on by substitute Andy Smith for Healy to find the net with a right-foot shot.

“I did not come into the game vowing to break the record but I was hoping that it could be done in this game and to score two goals in a game for Northern Ireland is fantastic,” said Healy, who has now scored six goals from six outings and in every game in the Caribbean.

“I think the last time I did that for Northern Ireland was on my debut.

“I just want to be consistent for my country. I just want to put away the chances that I am presented with – that is my job,” he said.

Northern Ireland manager Lawrie Sanchez said: “David Healy was great for us and now that he has the record, I hope he will go on to score more goals for us.”
