Longford hold Derry as Ferguson sees red

Longford captain Barry Ferguson’s first half red card ended this game as entertainment as Derry stuttered to get the point that takes them off the foot of the table.

Both sides hit the bar before a decent game was changed utterly by the sending off of defender Ferguson on 24 minutes.

A linesman saw an off the ball incident in which Ferguson was alleged to have elbowed Derry striker Alan Murphy and referee Paul Tuite showed him a straight red card.

Derry had all of the ball thereafter but couldn’t find a way to goal despite the best efforts of Ciaran Martyn and Murphy, who both came close.

Town keeper Stephen O'Brien then made the stop of the night on 90 minutes to keep out a shot from Gerry Gill.
