Israel has begun building a controversial fence along the West Bank border, aimed at stopping suicide bombers from entering Israel.

Israeli settlers in the West Bank and their supporters in the right wing parties said the fence is a prelude to an Israeli withdrawal to the border which existed before the 1967 war.

Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer said the fence has no political significance and is intended only to save Israeli lives.

Hundreds of Israelis have been killed in recent years in Palestinian suicide bomb attacks and almost all the attackers came from the West Bank.
