O’Donnell: Munster's future is bright

Munster back rower Tommy O’Donnell believes the Red Army have plenty to be excited about, with an exciting new generation of players coming through, determined to bring the province success.

The Thomond Park outfit endured a difficult maiden season under new head coach Rob Penney, performing well below par in the RaboDirect PRO12, winning just half of their 22 league games.

However, an outstanding Heineken Cup quarter-final performance, decorated with the passion and intensity which have become synonymous with Munster, seemed to restore confidence among players and fans.

That victory over Harlequins was followed by a gutsy showing against tournament favourites Clermont Auvergne as Munster finished the season strongly.

While the team is undoubtedly still in transition, O’Donnell is already eager to see how the squad develops and performs next season.

"There are a lot of positives going forward and moving in to next year,” he said.

“A lot of young players are coming through and claiming positions this year. I think the future is very bright.

“I’m really looking forward to next year and can’t wait to come back and start into it, and just get a full pre-season and see where we go from there."

Having made his league debut for the province in 2007, O’Donnell is by no means a newcomer, but 2012/13 marked a breakthrough season for the Tipperary man.

In a back row where competition for places is rife, O’Donnell has made the number seven jersey his own, with some energetic performances.

His efforts were recognised last Friday when he was crowned Munster Player of the Year and he admitted it was an enjoyable season on a personal level.

"It’s been a fantastic year, I was absolutely delighted to be nominated with the lads that were there with me (Dave Kilcoyne and Simon Zebo), and then just delighted to win it.

"I don’t think your place is ever cemented, you've to keep working at it but I’m delighted with the season, the way it went and the run of games I got.

“The season probably ended a small bit prematurely for us, but I’m delighted with how my own season went."
