Euro dream is still alive - Marshall

Teenager goalkeeper David Marshall is convinced that Celtic‘s Champions League dream is still alive – if they can stay awake when they travel to AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.

Teenager goalkeeper David Marshall is convinced that Celtic‘s Champions League dream is still alive – if they can stay awake when they travel to AC Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk.

The youngster’s penalty save from Ronaldinho could not prevent his team-mates from a 3-1 defeat to Barcelona in their tough Group F opener at Parkhead on Tuesday night.

But the 19-year-old believes they could have been sitting top of the table after their second-half fightback which has boosted confidence for their trips to Italy and the Ukraine.

Marshall explained: “We’re definitely still in the competition – there’s only one game gone after all – and I certainly won’t be going to the San Siro with any fear.

“We could have beaten Barcelona and we’ve managed to get some terrific results away from home against some great teams in recent seasons.

“This hasn’t knocked us and our second-half performance has to give us a boost.

“The way we came out after the break is so characteristic of the way we always seem to play in these big European games.

“With the crowd behind you it‘s some force and it’s only a lack of concentration that’s killed us.

“But hopefully we can now go over to Milan and get a decent result.

“We’ve a massive double-header coming up and we have to believe we can still do it.”

After the penalty save, substitute Chris Sutton cancelled out Deco‘s first-half opener.

Marshall felt at that stage Celtic had the Catalan giants on the ropes before Barcelona landed with the sucker-punch.

The Scotland international told the Celtic View: “We knew at half-time that we hadn’t done ourselves justice and there were certainly a few words said about what needed to be done.

“Fortunately we came out flying in the second half and there was a period after the goal when I didn‘t touch the ball for about 10 to 15 minutes.

“At that point I really thought we were going to win it and I don‘t think anyone from Barca could really have complained if we had got a draw given the way we played in the second half.

“They were awesome at times right enough just as you’d expect from a team with so many world-class players.

“They’ve obviously taken Henrik away from us and I suppose he‘s just shown again what a great striker he is.

“The quality they have in their squad is just phenomenal and I don‘t think they’ll be far away in terms of winning this competition.

“But that just goes to show how well we played at the start of the second half because for a while they just couldn’t get out of their own half.

“When we had them at 1-1 we really had them on the ropes.

“But you always know that when you don‘t finish off a side of Barca‘s quality they’re always capable of picking you off at the other end.”

Frank Rijkaard’s men should have been out of sight by half-time but returning hero Henrik Larsson turned the game their way again after his introduction by being involved in Ludovic Giuly’s goal before stealing in to score himself.
