Five killed in Pakistan court blast
Two people died and 49 others were injured in an explosion outside a court building in Pakistan’s north-west city of Peshawar today.
Police official Saleem Khan said authorities were still investigating the nature of the blast.
Islamist militants have staged numerous attacks in Pakistan in recent months, including several in Peshawar.
The city is the main gateway to the tribal belt where al-Qaida and the Taliban have been facing army offensives.
The building at the blast scene housed district and lower level courts.
Mr Khan said a suicide bomber tried to get inside the court building but blew himself up when he was stopped by a security guard and a police officer.
Thick black smoke billowed at the scene, while a car and a rickshaw were engulfed in flames, local TV footage showed.
A rescue volunteer escorted a wounded man away from the site.
At least 49 people were wounded along with five killed, Mr Khan said.
