Webster wins in Portugal

England’s Steve Webster won the Portugal Masters with a superb closing round of 64 at the Victoria Club in Vilamoura today.

One behind Argentina’s Daniel Vancsik overnight, the 32-year-old from Nuneaton was in the joint lead after going to the turn in a four-under 32, then took command when he sank a nine-foot eagle putt on the dangerous long 12th and followed it with a birdie two.

Webster, whose only previous European Tour victory in over a decade as a professional was the Italian Open two years ago, went on to add two more birdies and did not drop a shot until the tournament was in the bag at the last.

He claimed the first prize of nearly £350,000 with a 25-under-par total that was the lowest of the season – no winner has scored lower on the final day either – and then, remembering the death of his mother earlier this year, collapsed in tears.

Second was Ryder Cup Swede Robert Karlsson while Lee Westwood was joint fourth and Justin Rose, who needed a top-two finish to go top of the Order of Merit, was joint 21st.
