A massive explosion rocked central Baghdad today, on the outskirts of the so-called Green Zone.

There were reports of casualties.

Black and grey smoke poured into the air over a car park. Police cars and ambulances raced to the scene.

The area was once the headquarters of the US occupation authorities. It now houses the US and British Embassies.

“We were gathering outside the convention centre seeking jobs,” said one witness, Alla Hassan.

"We were thrown on the ground. Then I saw many dead people on the ground.”

The US military had no immediate comment.
