Lane withdraws from Galway race

The race for the Galway hurling manager's job has been reduced to two candidates after former boss Noel Lane withdrew from the running.

The race for the Galway hurling manager's job has been reduced to two candidates after former boss Noel Lane withdrew from the running.

Current boss Conor Hayes and Lane's predecessor Mattie Murphy will now battle it out and the appointment is expected to be announced next Monday.

Hayes' senior side lost out by 19 points in the qualifiers to Kilkenny this year, while Murphy led his minors to All-Ireland glory in September.

Therefore, Murphy is seen as strong favourite for the position, having held it twice in the '90s.

He only agreed to put his name forward when the county board set up a committee to choose the manager, instead of going through club channels.
