Hamilton won't ask for new contract, claims father
Lewis Hamilton will not be asking McLaren for a new contract whether he wins the Formula One drivers’ title or not.
The 22-year-old is on the verge of becoming both the first rookie champion and the youngest after victory at the Japanese Grand Prix on Sunday gave him a 12-point championship lead with two races remaining.
It has been suggested that Hamilton’s sensational debut season could see his basic wage at the British team multiply by a factor of 10 to around £20m.
But his father and representative, Anthony Hamilton, insists he will not be forcing the issue with McLaren chief Ron Dennis.
“We have the same contract from when we signed up for this job but everything changes after a while, doesn’t it?” he said.
“We won’t be asking for anything. We will be waiting as normal to be given things as it’s much better to be given than when you ask.
“But I’m sure we won’t have to wait long. We are in a long-term relationship at McLaren.”
